How To Make Getting Back to School Easier

Summer may still be in full swing, however, we all know that in a few short weeks it will be back to school season once again. Back to school can be a challenging and uncertain time for children since schedules and responsibilities will change drastically. We all know how difficult it can be to transition from a summer full of fun, free time and sleeping late to a full schedule of school, homework and extracurricular activities. In addition to adjusting to a sudden change of schedule and routine, there may be other factors involved, potentially making the back to school process a bit more stressful for some, such as attending a new school, becoming acquainted with new teachers, becoming familiar with a new method of transportation to school, or perhaps new and unfamiliar after school activities.

Here are some tips that can help make the back to school transition a bit easier.

  1. Adjust your child’s bedtime schedule so that they will wake up with plenty of time to eat breakfast and so that they will be more alert and focused in the morning when the first day of school arrives.
  2. Take your child shopping and allow them to pick out supplies for the school year, such as a new backpack, lunch box/bag, school clothes and, of course, classroom supplies.  This can help motivate your child and get them excited about school.
  3. Create lunch menus together. Ask your child about their favorite lunch foods and healthy snacks.
  4. Take a walk or ride to school (or to the bus stop) to practice the route your child will be taking to school, and perhaps to after school activities.
  5. If offered by your child’s school, attend a walkthrough to see the school and classrooms. They may also see a few familiar faces. This is a great way to make the first day of school seem more exciting and less intimidating.
  6. Set homework rules and schedules, making homework a priority.
  7. Let your child know that they will have a great school year! Remind them that you are both “in this together” and that you will be there for them.  Encourage them to come to you with any concerns or difficulties that they may face throughout the year.
  8. Celebrate the completion of the first day of school with a special treat or surprise and be sure to ask your child all about their day!

Getting back into a daily routine can be beneficial not only to your child but to everyone in your household. Following tips such as these can help create a more organized and less stressful home environment in which your child, and you, will thrive!

Have a happy school year!
